Press Release

02.20.2020 - 05.20.2020

Clandestina presents its first 2020 exhibition featuring multidisciplinary artist Amor Muñoz. The exhibition explores a series of works of textiles, drawings, sound and technology proposing a relationship between coding, handcraft, matter, and language. This first individual exhibition by the artist in the United States comes after her solo booth at the fair UNTITLED, Art San Francisco in January 2020, presented by the gallery in collaboration with Espacio Nancarrow O’Gorman where the artist currently conducts research for a production related to sound, technology, biotechnology, and coding.

PATTERNS is a curatorial project that allows the dialogue between a series of works relevant to understanding Muñoz’ approach to linking coding as an active human process, the transition between analogue and digital language, and the politics of manufacture. From her practice, Amor Muñoz is a representative figure of the female movement in the arena of coding; a practice that day by day gains room and expands the boundaries of female participation and representation.Amor Muñoz works with textile, performance, drawing, sound and experimental electronics to explore the relationship between technology and society, showing particular interest in the interaction between material forms and the social discourse.

The artist is particularly interested in the way technology affects fabrication systems and how labor and craft are mutating under the practices of contemporary global economy.  Her research is focused on the history of technology, language systems, obsolesce, appropriated technologies, handcraft and production systems. Her process is linked to DIY strategies and the Maker’s movement, a culture that emphasizes active learning in a social environment with attention to education on the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
